The most common type of periodontal disease is chronic periodontitis, which is characterized by a relatively slow and progressive loss of gums and bone. Other common presentations include aggressive periodontitis, which is characterized by very rapid destruction of the periodontium, necrotizing periodontitis, which often occurs in individuals suffering from systemic conditions such as immunosuppression or malnutrition, and periodontitis caused by a systemic disease.
